Tokyo Bay
Kachidoki Bridge

The two ends of Kachidoki Bridge look over the old part of town around Tokyo Bay and stands across the Sumida River. It is one of the few moveable bridges in Japan today (Presently the moveable part is locked). The bridge appears in many manga, anime, and films and in Director Oshii's film "Patlabor 2: The Movie" there is a scene where the moveable part is attacked by a rocket missile.

Nihonbashi Qilin Statue
(Chuo-ku, Tokyo)

The current stone-made Nihonbashi (bridge) was built in 1911 and is an arch bridge over the Nihonbashi River, which links Sumida River and it's outer areas. As the starting point of the Edo Five Routes, with the message "taking flight from this point", a bronze lion and qilin statue by the sculptor Osao Watanabe was created for the central post. It is said that the statue carries on it's shoulders the prosperity of the capital city Tokyo.

Izusan Shrine / Hakusan Shrine
(Atami city, Shizuoka)

Izusan Shrine is a shrine in the Shizuoka Prefecture in the city of Atami. It is located approx. 1.5 km Northeast of the JR line Atami train station. Hakusan Shrine is located deep within the shrine. Izusan Shrine is said to be where Hojo Masako (a daughter of a powerful clan) and Minamoto no Yoritomo (in exile) secretly met while being opposed by their families. The shrine is now known as a place to bring together love and marriage.

TOEI ANIMATION GALLERY

Oizumi-Gakuen is the biggest hub of Japan's anime production and home to Toei Animation where Mr. Hosoda got his start. There is a concentration of anime studios in this area. Tateyama Kurobe
Alpine Route

For the majestic nature of the Northern Japanese Alps, Director Hosoda asks you to please visit the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. As one of the three main holy mountains of Japan, Tateyama became a place for mountain deity worship 1,300 years ago. The area became one of world's few alpine tourist destinations since its completion in 1971. There is no need for rigorous trekking -- one could top the route with available transportations, and enjoy the breathtaking view of Kurobe Ravine above clouds.

Shibu Onsen, Shinshu

Located in Yamanouchi, Nagano, Shibu Onsen is an acclaimed hot springs town that first opened to bathers over 1,300 years ago. Among the 35 hot springs inns and 9 public bathhouses, the four-story wooden structure of Kanaguya (the metal hardware shop) that started operating in the 1930s is worth the visit. It is registered as a national treasure of Japan. With the delightful harmony between traditional Japan and European influences from the Meiji Era, visitors can enjoy the nostalgia portrayed in Miyazaki’s film Spirited Away.

Ameyoko, Ueno

Ameya-Yokocho, a.k.a. Ameyoko, is a giant shopping strip that attracts 500K visitors on weekends. This district supposedly originated as a black market near Ueno Station after Tokyo was destroyed in WWII. There were other black markets but Ameyoko is the only one that still exists. After Japan’s surrender, US Army supplies flooded the underground market with items like candy, sugar, and clothing. Today, this unusual street in Tokyo is lined with shops offering world gourmet food and miscellaneous merchandises. Visitors enjoy rummaging through its borderless nostalgic atmosphere.

Igusa Hachimangu Shrine
(Suginami-ku, Tokyo)

In Zempukiji of Suginami District of Tokyo, there is a shrine called Igusa Hachimangu where Director Ishii frequently visits. The shrine was built for the local ancient deity toward the end of the Heian Period (1190). With the close relation to Yoritomo Minamoto, the founder of the Kamakura shogunate (1185-1333), every five years the shrine dedicates a traditional horseback archery event to the deity and the nation´s peace and prosperity.

Katori Shrine
(Narita city, Chiba)

At the Katori Shrine in Kitahadori District of Narita, where Director Ishii’s 2nd independent film Hello! Junichi was filmed; visitors can enjoy the shishimai of Kitahadori once a year. This traditional lion dance has been assigned by Narita city as an important part of their folk culture. This has been passed down through oral instructions since the Edo period and is known for the 3 lions: large, medium and the female, dancing with a dragon mask on their heads and drums on their stomachs. This performance is open to public on the 1st Sunday of April at the Katori Shrine yard.

Kushida Shrine

In 1991, it became the stage for Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah and is famous for the scene where King Ghidorah dynamically destroys the neon billboards. Among the bustling streets, the Kushida Shrine quietly stands, the local deity worshipped for longevity and prosperity. Visit their seasonal grand festivals that are Hakata’s famous attractions.

SUNPU TAKUMISHUKU

Artist Yoshitaka Amano’s hometown Shizuoka is known for Japan’s largest production of tea and wasabi as well as their traditional craftwork. Fushimi Inari Taisha

Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine for all 40,000 Inari shrines throughout Japan. Inari shrines are built to worship one of many Japanese deities, in this case the Inari no Kami. The Fushimi Taisha wards off evil spirits with its tunnel of red torii gates, and is protected by the white fox, the messenger of the deity. The shrine has been worshipped by Japanese people for 1,300 years, and is a representative shrine of Japan.

Nachi Falls

The Nachi Falls has been revered by Japanese people as the embodiment of the deity for the Hirou Shrine, a part of the Kumano Nachi Grand Shrine. As the tallest and most abundant, the Nachi Falls is one of the top three grand cascades of Japan. Ancient pilgrims have brought Buddhist offerings to a mound located on the left side after passing through the giant torii gate. This majestic waterfall flows through a virgin forest and visitors from around the world come to admire its glory. On July 7, 2004 UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage.

OSAKA SHINSEKAI

Shinsekai downtown shopping area of Naniwa District, Osaka bares a close resemblance to the cityscape from TEKKONKINKREET 3DCG Pilot Film, which Koji Moritmoto directed based on the legendary manga by Taiyo Matsumoto. This ambitious urban development undertook in 1912, daringly recreating the Western glamor of Paris or New York during the Jazz Age. An extensive arcade alley Jan Jan Yokocho ties the symbolic Tsūtenkaku tower all the way to Nishinari District. After the war, this highly prosperous area was mourned as the "forgotten entertainment strip" as unlawfulness quickly took over. Today, the retro ambiance that is reminiscent of post-war Showa era Japan makes it a tourist hot spot.

Harmonica Yokocho
Kichijoji, Musashino-City, Tokyo

The renowned Harmonica Yokocho at the north exit of Kichijoji Station is a narrow alleyway with nearly 100 bars and shops crammed into it, and goes way back to post-war black markets that sprung up in the late 1940s. Supposedly, local author Katsuichiro Kamei described the tightly packed storefronts as the blowholes of a harmonica. Director Morimoto’s favorite is a clandestine but very popular curry joint, “Piwang,” run by the owner himself with room for maybe five at the counter tops. The shop uses Heath Ceramics, displaying its tasteful choice for tableware. Try the “2-color Curry” boasting two curries enjoyed on one plate. There are Morimoto posters on the walls and on sale. If you sit next to Director Morimoto, the shop’s regular, you may get his autograph right then and there!

In 2004, UNESCO designated Mt. Koya as one of the World Heritage Sites "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.” The site receives over 2 million visitors annually from all around the world. The 2km pilgrimage path that leads from a bridge called Ichinohashi to the mausoleum of Kobodaishi is known as the Okunoin, and is walled with towering centuries-old Japanese cedar and scattered with countless tombs commemorating the dead along the way. The space is considered not of this world, rather a holy site; a hollowed ground.
